I’m a documentary cinematographer and DP based in Nashville. I shoot both observational documentaries and doc-style branded campaigns. Doing both has made me a better DP overall in that “iron sharpens iron” kind of way. My verite documentary work has made me sensitive to story and emotional subtext, quick on my feet, and taught me to work well with available light.

On those jobs, I am sensitive to how I’m showing up in someone’s home, often with a stripped down FX9 kit and skeleton crew, and bring my Southern warmth and “quiet one” calm vibes wherever I go. Directors can trust me to be listening, advocating for the story, and to deliver full scenes that can stand alone without voiceover (your editor will thank you!) You can trust me to nail those key emotional moments that make the scene actually mean something.

Mindy Cook is a white woman with brown hair holding a cinema camera on her shoulder.

My experience on branded jobs has helped me elevate my frames, deliver under the pressure of a video village, and lead teams to create more complex lighting set ups. We’re often working with a whole different set of concerns around time, budget, and directing “real people.” I’m comfortable moving between these two modes, and understanding how to scale up or down a gear package depending on what the project needs.

I came up as an AC, which gave me technical chops on a range of elite camera systems, including Arri’s Alexa 35, and the Sony Venice, and helped me understand good department leadership.

That said, what my branded clients often love about working with me is that I can get a lot of looks in a short amount of time, borrowing from my observational work, that feel like they’re “editing themselves” thanks to my deep understanding of scene coverage and the demands of an edit.

Collaborators often describe me as steady, kind, and easy to be around—someone who can hold serious stories without making the room heavy. I smile a lot when I shoot, listen more than I talk, and let that softness serve the work. When working with an out of town crew, I know all the best spots to eat and offer super gentle guidance on the southern manners that some coastal folks miss. Think of me like your friendly Southern fixer who’s got your back.

How I Work With You

  1. My first priority is understanding your vision. In prep, I ask detailed questions about story, visual language, tone, and objectives so I can design coverage that supports your concept and gives you strong options in post.

  2. Plan for real-world constraints. I plan realistically around locations, people, schedules, and budgets, and I’m honest about what’s possible. My goal is to get to a “yes!”

  3. Stay calm and present on the day. On set, I am calm, prepared, and people-focused—often introducing myself without the camera first, then fading into the background to capture natural, unselfconscious moments. My handheld work is composed and patient, holding space when something meaningful is happening so it can actually cut!

What I Care About In The Work

My roots are in the nonprofit world, telling stories of vulnerable children, families, and communities. There I learned that how we look at people matters as much as how beautiful the frame is. On every project, I’m committed to protecting the dignity of the people on camera, honoring the agreements made with participants, and erring on the side of care when choices are unclear.

I’ve filmed in the mountains of Rwanda, industrial towns in China, homes of celebrities and everyday folks, and yes—the honky-tonks of Nashville. Different worlds, same values: story first, beautiful visuals, and committed to doing the work with a high level of integrity.

When I’m not on set, you’ll usually find me hiking, working on my horsemanship, or exploring the local food scene with friends.

If you’re looking for a documentary DP who can move comfortably between feature docs and doc-style branded work—and show up in the way each truly needs—I’d love to talk about your next project, in Nashville or wherever the story leads!
